Well, Oppo, after a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I'm in a rental. A bright red Mazda 3 with no guts... and I keep jamming my left foot into the carpet looking for a clutch pedal.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My original plan was to trade in my Golf for the new one next year, but obviously that's not really an option now. It turns out that, thanks to the update, there are no more manual Golfs available, anywhere. New, at least. It looks like the best thing to do is get a reasonably cheap set of wheels that I can sell for minimal loss when the Mk7 arrives.

So, what should that vehicle be?

Passat Diesel with the manual. If you can find one. Great package and it's not obscenely priced.

You're only going to have the rental for so long. You need to look at what you can get not what you want. That's how I ended up in '04 Ford Taurus. I needed a car now and it was cheap, comfy and will hold its value.

Impreza 2.5RS. You can find them for dirt cheap on craigslist... some need minor work, at most a new head gasket and they are tits to drive.

I just happened to be looking for one myself. this one is 1500 but has the blown head gasket everything else looks swell on it tho. you could be out the door with a reliable running car for 3 grand here. http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/4174219575…

E30. It's like a Golf, but old, cheap, and RWD.

Just get an already depreciated Kia or Hyundai anything and beat the living tar out of it. There's a simple joy, especially in winter, of having a car you don't care about in the slightest and flogging it. Plus, with it already depreciated you should be able to get out of it for the same as you got in.

Pop on CoPart and try to find something Swedish with either Normal Wear or Minor Dents/Scratches. People donate them to auctions all the time and you'd end up with a really, really cheap yet surprisingly fast Q-ship with an un-branded title that you could turn around and sell for at least what you put into it.

The one i found has rust, but if he is using it as a bridge car, who cares... besides its usually the back quarter panel, and for 1500-4k who cares about rust. it would be my winter beater as long as the heat is hot and the drive is fun FTW

That would be awesome, Thanks. I started watching WRC when he was winning so became a huge fan, of the RS at that time.. think this would be an easier build rather than the Mika Hakkinen MP4-13 lol!

I used to go to school with a kid whose dad's company sponsored a car in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship, and he would go on and on about Rallies and car setup and things like that, All this was back in 98, we were in the 7th grade. And in 2001 or 02 dont remember, the team decided to shift to the 2.5RS Impreza, been hooked ever since. APRC is quite big back home(India), so it used to get aired regularly on ESPN along with WRC. But I moved to the US in 04, and haven't been able to see a proper race since. Catch small bits and pieces now and again through justin tv, but the stream is never reliable. And yeah my friend these days runs a Suzuki Gypsy on Raid de Himalaya as a privateer..

So the warranty is up? And does insurance got your back?

Insurance does seem to "got my back", but since it's a lease, I won't see any of the car's value. The warranty is up at 80,000 km, but VW doesn't seem to have any cars left... so I'm thinking WRX!

I was in the same boat a couple years ago. Had sold my Saab 9-3SC in anticipation of doing Euro Delivery on my BMW wagon. Had to bridge a May to September gap. I picked up a 200K Volvo 945 for a grand. Put a couple hundred into it, sold it when I was done with it for a grand. Cheap motoring. Best to not be in a hurry though with 112 mighty Swedish Steeds under the hood! Mighty comfy though.
